Effective jobsite storage and handling of structural bolting components can be the deciding factor between a well-organized, on-schedule project and the costly need to replace bolting materials entirely—resulting in wasted time and resources. At LRKD Industries, we prioritize proper jobsite storage. Here are a few important reasons why investing extra effort in storing your fasteners correctly is essential.
Structural Bolting Lot Traceability
Many jobs require lot traceability for storing fasteners. This involves marking each container of nuts, bolts, and washers with production lot numbers. Each type of structural bolting component must be stored separately by its lot. Such organization ensures the correct fastening components are used in the appropriate sections of a project and is essential for pre-installation verification testing. While some projects may not mandate lot traceability, we strongly recommend its implementation due to the high level of organization it offers.
Effects of Environmental Elements on Uncoated Components
Uncoated bolting components are treated with a water-soluble lubricant to facilitate installation and provide protection. To preserve their condition, it is essential to store nuts, bolts, and washers in sealed containers, shielding them from environmental factors such as high temperatures, rain, and snow. Unfortunately, our sales team frequently observes improper storage practices on jobsites, often involving containers covered with tarps. This is highly detrimental, as tarps can lead to condensation forming on the components, which in turn washes away the water-soluble lubricant.
Other times, we simply see uncovered containers which, in hot and dry weather, will cause the lubricant to evaporate. If the lubricant evaporates, one should re-lubricate the components (this excludes twist-off TC bolts). Bolts that are improperly stored for too long can develop rust or dirt build-up –particularly in the threads. If this occurs, you must clean, re-lubricate, and retest the components prior to installation. That said, sometimes a bolting component is left in the elements so long that it cannot be fixed. This sort of neglect can cost your company major time and money, therefore, it is best to keep these components stored properly.
Note:
Galvanized structural bolting components often feature a stronger, more durable lubricant that is not water-soluble. However, proper storage remains crucial, as certain lubricants can degrade or melt when exposed to high temperatures. If this occurs, it is essential to reapply the lubricant before installation.
Proper jobsite storage of structural bolts can significantly save time by reducing the need to search for the correct components, clean or reapply lubricant, or, in the worst-case scenario, replace bolts entirely. If you have questions about jobsite storage or any other fastener-related concerns, our expert sales team is ready to assist.
